I used to live with the pain you might be feeling right now: cravings, belly fat, adult acne, fatigue, low energy.
I grew up in the Midwest during the late 80s, early 90s, the age of fat-free everything. Fat-free and full of sugar. My family’s staples were bagels, Toaster Strudels®, Wheat Thins, cereal, Pop-Tarts®, frozen pizza, and “fruit” snacks (a laughable name). There’s a story my family tells of finding me eating only the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms box in my sleep. The frosted wheat bits weren’t sweet enough.
Wheat and sugar were in virtually every meal at home and school. Since I was a skinny kid I didn’t think much of it, but by the time I was in college, I relied on sweets to de-stress. By my mid-twenties, I was edgy unless I had daily fixes, and I couldn’t figure out why I was struggling with adult acne (hint: it was the lemon bars, cheesecake, toast, “energy” bars, cookies…).
Once I was married, this addiction to sugar didn’t just affect me anymore, and it became a source of embarrassment and shame around my husband.
To make it all worse, my efforts to slowly wean off these foods never worked.
In 2012, I went cold turkey on all of it and won for good. It took time, but my waistline shrunk, my skin cleared, and my confidence around food became iron-clad. How I thought about food in public and private became the same. There was no other word to describe what I felt: freedom.
